Called by Name, Not by Category
He calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. There is a difference between being managed and being known. A shepherd who manages a flock thinks in numbers — how many are fed, how many are safe. A shepherd who knows his sheep thinks in names. Jesus does not address us as a crowd needing direction; he addresses us as individuals who carry a name he himself has spoken. That single word — name — changes the weight of everything that follows. To be led by someone who knows your name means the path ahead was not drawn up for people in general but for you in particular. The terrain he chooses accounts for where you are weak, where you tire, and what you need to see. This is not a promise that the path will be smooth. It is something steadier than that: the one choosing the path cannot mistake you for someone else. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-07
