He Leads, You Move

He calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. There is a small, easily missed word in this verse: leadeth. Not pushes, not shouts from behind, not sends a map. Leads. The shepherd moves first, and the sheep follow the sound of a familiar voice. This tells us something about how guidance actually works. We often treat direction as a puzzle to solve — we gather information, weigh options, then ask God to approve our conclusion. But the picture Jesus paints is more intimate than that. The sheep do not strategize. They simply stay close enough to hear. The movement comes after the listening, not before it. If you are waiting for certainty before you take a step, you may have the order reversed. Certainty is rarely given in advance. Trust is what closes the gap between where you stand and where you are being led. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-14
