VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory predicts molecular shapes based on the idea that electron pairs around a central atom repel each other and arrange themselves as far apart as possible to minimize this repulsion. Both bonding pairs (shared electrons in bonds) and lone pairs (unshared electrons) count as regions of electron density that repel each other, though lone pairs take up more space and repel more strongly than bonding pairs. The number of electron regions determines the electronic geometry, while the actual molecular shape is named based on only the positions of atoms. For example, water has four electron regions (two bonds and two lone pairs) giving a tetrahedral electronic geometry, but its molecular shape is bent because we only describe where the atoms are located.
