# Psalm 60: From Defeat to Divine Victory
## **Context and Structure**
Psalm 60 is a communal lament following military defeat, attributed to David during the Aramean wars (2 Samuel 8, 10). The superscription mentions the Valley of Salt where 12,000 Edomites were slain, though the psalm itself describes a prior defeat before ultimate victory.
The psalm divides into three movements:
1. **Lament over defeat** (vv. 1-5)
2. **Oracle of divine promise** (vv. 6-8)
3. **Prayer for future victory** (vv. 9-12)
## **Part 1: The Shock of Defeat (vv. 1-5)**
### *"O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses"* (v. 1)
Israel experiences what feels like divine abandonment. The earthquake imagery ("You have made the land to quake," v. 2) suggests their world has been shaken. This echoes the covenant curse in Deuteronomy 28:25: *"The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies."*
**Key insight**: They don't blame circumstances or enemies—they recognize God's sovereign hand even in defeat. This is covenant thinking: when God's people suffer, they examine their relationship with Him.
### *"You have made your people see hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger"* (v. 3)
The metaphor of intoxicating wine describes disorientation and helplessness. Compare Isaiah 51:17: *"You who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his wrath."*
### *"You have set up a banner for those who fear you"* (v. 4)
Even in lament, there's a turn. The "banner" (נֵס, *nes*) is a rallying point—God hasn't completely abandoned them. The phrase "that they may flee from the bow" can also be translated "to be displayed because of the truth," suggesting God will vindicate His faithful ones.
## **Part 2: God's Oracle of Sovereignty (vv. 6-8)**
This section (repeated almost verbatim in Psalm 108:7-9) presents a divine oracle, likely delivered through a prophet or priest.
### *"God has spoken in his holiness"* (v. 6)
What follows is not wishful thinking but covenant promise rooted in God's holy character.
### *"I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Valley of Succoth"* (v. 6)
God claims the Promised Land from west (Shechem) to east (Succoth). This recalls Joshua's distribution of the land—it belongs to God to give.
### *"Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet; Judah is my scepter"* (v. 7)
- **Gilead & Manasseh**: Transjordan territories
- **Ephraim**: The military strength (helmet) of the northern tribes
- **Judah**: The royal tribe (scepter) from which Messiah comes (Genesis 49:10)
### *"Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph"* (v. 8)
Dramatic shift! Israel's enemies become servants:
- **Moab**: A mere washbasin (for foot-washing—menial service)
- **Edom**: Receives the thrown shoe (claiming possession, like Ruth 4:7-8)
- **Philistia**: Subject to triumphant proclamation
This reverses their current humiliation. The very nations threatening Israel will serve Israel's God.
## **Part 3: Renewed Confidence Through God (vv. 9-12)**
### *"Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?"* (v. 9)
Having heard God's oracle, the psalmist now asks how victory will come. Edom, the nation that gloated over Israel's fall (Obadiah 1:10-14), must be conquered.
### *"Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies"* (v. 10)
Honest wrestling continues. They acknowledge past defeats but now seek God's renewed presence. This recalls the Ark going before Israel in Numbers 10:35: *"Rise up, O LORD, and let your enemies be scattered."*
### *"Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man!"* (v. 11)
**Central theology**: Human strength is הֶבֶל (*hevel*)—"vain, futile, a vapor." This echoes Psalm 33:16-17: *"The king is not saved by his great army... The war horse is a false hope for salvation."*
They've learned through defeat what prosperity couldn't teach: dependence on God alone.
### *"With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes"* (v. 12)
**Paradox of faith**: "We shall do valiantly" + "He will tread down." True faith engages fully while recognizing God as the source of victory. Compare Philippians 2:12-13: *"Work out your salvation... for it is God who works in you."*
## **Theological Themes**
1. **Covenant Discipline**: God uses defeat to correct His people (Hebrews 12:6)
2. **Divine Sovereignty**: God owns all nations, not just Israel (Psalm 24:1)
3. **Futility of Human Strength**: Apart from God, even Israel's might is worthless
4. **Prayer as Warfare**: The battle is won first in seeking God's face
5. **Messianic Hope**: Judah's scepter points toward Christ, the ultimate King who treads down all enemies (Revelation 19:15)
## **Christ Connection**
Jesus perfectly embodies this psalm's movement:
- He experienced God-forsakenness: *"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"* (Matthew 27:46)
- He was given the cup of God's wrath (Matthew 26:39)
- He emerged victorious, declaring *"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me"* (Matthew 28:18)
- Through Him, believers share in triumph: *"Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ"* (1 Corinthians 15:57)
## **Application**
When we experience defeat—spiritual, relational, circumstantial:
1. Bring honest lament to God
2. Listen for His covenant promises
3. Acknowledge human strength is futile
4. Move forward in God-dependent action
The psalm teaches that **setbacks can become setups for displaying God's glory when we turn from self-reliance to God-reliance**.
