## Fundamental Frequency The **fundamental frequency** is the lowest frequency at which a system naturally vibrates. In sound, it corresponds to the first harmonic and determines the perceived pitch of a note. For example, when a guitar string vibrates, the fundamental is the longest wavelength that fits on the string (with nodes only at the ends). ## Common Misconception **Misconception**: The fundamental frequency is always the loudest or most dominant component of a sound. **Reality**: The fundamental can actually be weaker than higher harmonics (overtones), or even completely absent in some sounds. Our brains are remarkably good at perceiving the "missing fundamental" - we still hear the correct pitch even when the fundamental frequency itself is not physically present in the sound wave. This is why small speakers that can't reproduce low bass frequencies can still make us perceive low-pitched notes.
