## Formation of the Solar System The solar system formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from a giant rotating cloud of gas and dust called the solar nebula. When this cloud collapsed under its own gravity, most of the material gathered at the center to form the Sun. The remaining material flattened into a spinning disk around the young star, where particles collided and stuck together, gradually building up into larger bodies—first dust grains, then rocks, then planetesimals, and eventually planets. ## Common Misconception **Misconception**: All planets orbit in perfect circles around the Sun. **Reality**: Planets actually follow elliptical (oval-shaped) orbits, though most are nearly circular. Some objects in the solar system, like comets and dwarf planets, have much more elongated elliptical orbits. This was first discovered by Johannes Kepler and remains one of his fundamental laws of planetary motion.
