In other words, it asks: "Which parameter values would have been most likely to generate the data we actually observed?" **How it works:** You construct a likelihood function L(θ|data) that represents the probability of observing your data given parameters θ, then find the θ that maximizes this function. ## Common Misconception **"MLE gives you the most probable parameter values given the data"** This is backwards! MLE gives you the parameter values that maximize P(data|θ), not P(θ|data). - MLE answers: "How probable is this data under different parameter values?" - It does NOT answer: "How probable are different parameter values given this data?" The latter question requires Bayesian inference, which incorporates prior beliefs about parameters. MLE makes no probabilistic statements about the parameters themselves—it treats them as fixed (but unknown) values to be estimated, not as random variables with their own probability distributions.
