## Baseflow vs Stormflow **Baseflow** is the sustained, slow-moving discharge in streams that comes from groundwater seepage and delayed subsurface sources. It maintains stream levels during dry periods between rain events. **Stormflow** is the rapid increase in streamflow during and immediately after precipitation events. It includes both overland flow (surface runoff) and quick subsurface flow through shallow soil layers. ## Common Misconception **The misconception:** Many people assume stormflow is *only* surface runoff (water flowing across the land surface). **The reality:** Stormflow actually includes significant contributions from **subsurface stormflow** (interflow) - water that infiltrates into soil but moves laterally through shallow subsurface pathways to reach streams quickly. In many forested or vegetated watersheds, this subsurface component can dominate the storm response, even though it arrives at the stream nearly as quickly as surface runoff. Only in urbanized or heavily saturated/compacted areas does true overland flow dominate.
