Come on, then, and let us go together, and let us spend our time in discoursing of things that are profitable. Talkative's dislike of bad discourse TALK. To talk of things that are good, to me is very acceptable, with you or with any other; and I am glad that I have met with those that incline to so good a work; for, to speak the truth, there are but few that care thus to spend their time, (as they are in their travels), but choose much rather to be speaking of things to no profit; and this hath been a trouble for me. FAITH. That is indeed a thing to be lamented; for what things so worthy of the use of the tongue and mouth of men on earth as are the things of the God of heaven? TALK. I like you wonderful well, for your sayings are full of conviction; and I will add, what thing is so pleasant, and what so profitable, as to talk of the things of God? What things so pleasant (that is, if a man hath any delight in things that are wonderful)? For instance, if a man doth delight to talk of the history or the mystery of things; or if a man doth love to talk of miracles, wonders, or signs, where shall he find things recorded so delightful, and so sweetly penned, as in the Holy Scripture?", "source": {"label": "John Bunyan, Pilgrim's Progress (1678)", "url": "", "ref": "§186", "authority_tier": "external_aligned"}, "shelf": "classics", "box": "pilgrims_progress", "bands": ["pilgrim", "bunyan", "allegory"], "connections": [{"to_card_id": "card_n_a908c776ccb9", "relationship": "same_section", "origin": "nesting_2026_06_12"}, {"to_card_id": "card_n_a667ab65d655", "relationship": "same_section", "origin": "nesting_2026_06_12"}, {"to_card_id": "card_spine_classics", "relationship": "member_of", "evidence": "a member of the classics shelf in the keeping"}], "author": "engine", "created_at": "2026-05-19T13:07:21.410049+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-05-19T19:57:55.255464+00:00", "visibility": "public", "lifecycle_stage": "public", "volatility": "permanent", "metrics": {"paperclips_count": 0, "helpful_count": 0, "not_helpful_count": 0, "cite_count": 4, "walks_through_count": 0, "flagged_count": 0}, "source_hash": "c41e2a9e912a5b20a9d5253ef3fb3371428b18d066e5e445135ef5b41250330a", "witnesses": [{"class": "manuscript_tradition", "label": "First edition Nathaniel Ponder, London 1678 — original imprint", "ref": "Ponder-1678"}, {"class": "critical_edition", "label": "Oxford World's Classics — Roger Sharrock, 1960/1984", "ref": "Sharrock-OWC"}, {"class": "republication", "label": "Project Gutenberg — Pilgrim's Progress", "url": "https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/131", "ref": "PG-131"}, {"class": "republication", "label": "Internet Archive — multiple editions", "url": "https://archive.org/search?query=pilgrim%27s+progress+bunyan", "ref": "IA-Bunyan"}, {"class": "non_government_archive", "label": "Christian Classics Ethereal Library", "url": "https://www.ccel.org/ccel/bunyan/pilgrim.html", "ref": "CCEL-Bunyan"}, {"class": "citation_tradition", "label": "Cited extensively by Spurgeon, Edwards, modern Reformed writers", "ref": "Spurgeon-Edwards-cites"}], "witness_status": "passed", "witness_status_reason": "6 witnesses across 5 independence classes: ['citation_tradition', 'critical_edition', 'manuscript_tradition', 'non_government_archive', 'republication']", "surface": "secular", "presentation": {"glyph": "•", "kind_label": "pilgrims progress", "by": "John Bunyan, Pilgrim's Progress (1678)", "authority": "external_aligned", "posted": "", "standing": ""}, "neighbors": [{"id": "card_n_a908c776ccb9", "title": "Pilgrim's Progress §383: Now as they walked in this land, they had more rejoicing than in parts more remote from...", "relationship": "same section", "why": "", "href": "/card/card_n_a908c776ccb9", "resolved": true}, {"id": "card_n_a667ab65d655", "title": "Pilgrim's Progress §328: So they went on and Ignorance followed.", "relationship": "same section", "why": "", "href": "/card/card_n_a667ab65d655", "resolved": true}, {"id": "card_spine_classics", "title": "The classics — the great books, kept whole", "relationship": "on the shelf of", "why": "a member of the classics shelf in the keeping", "href": "/card/card_spine_classics", "resolved": true}]}
