The Initiative Was Never Yours

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit. There is a quiet relief in these words that we often miss because we read them too quickly. Jesus is not congratulating the disciples on their good spiritual instincts. He is dismantling their instinct to take credit. The choosing moved in one direction only — from him toward them. That reversal matters enormously, because it changes what failure means and what fruit means. If you initiated the relationship, then every dry stretch feels like your fault and every good stretch feels like your achievement. But Jesus plants the initiative entirely in himself. The fruit he describes is not something you manufacture by trying harder. It grows because he chose the ground, prepared it, and set the vine. Your part is not to generate the fruit but to stay connected long enough to let it form. The initiative was never yours. Neither is the pressure. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-17
