The Knowing That Comes Through Stillness

"Be still, and know that I am God." There is a particular kind of knowing that cannot be forced or studied into existence. The psalmist does not say "work harder and know" or "speak more and know." He says be still. The Hebrew word here carries the weight of releasing your grip — letting hands open, breath slow, the constant internal argument quiet down. What follows that stillness is not emptiness but recognition: *I am God*. Not a theological proposition to memorize, but a presence that becomes plain when the noise clears. We often treat knowing God as a task to complete, a box to check on our morning schedule. But this verse suggests something simpler and harder: that awareness of God is already available, waiting just beneath the surface of our hurry. The still moment does not produce God. It removes what was blocking the view. He was already there. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-21
