The Direction Changes Everything
"Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find." — John 21:6 The disciples had fished through the entire night and caught nothing. Their arms were tired. Their method was sound. Their effort was real. Yet the net came up empty every time. Then a voice from the shore gave them one small, specific instruction: not a new boat, not a new net, not new fishermen — just a different side. This is not a story about technique. It is a story about whose word you are working under. The disciples had been operating on their own accumulated knowledge, and their knowledge had run out. The moment they moved under Jesus's instruction — not their own instinct — the water that had yielded nothing suddenly could not hold what was given. Nothing external changed. The sea was the same. The hour was the same. The difference was the source of the directive. Obedience to a specific word in a specific moment is not passive. It is the most active thing a person can do. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-12
