The Fruit Is Not Your Project

"I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." A branch does not manufacture sap. It does not schedule its own flowering or calculate the timing of ripeness. It simply stays attached, and what needs to happen, happens through it. Jesus does not say 'try harder' or 'do more.' He says abide. The weight of production never falls on the branch — it falls on the connection. We tend to treat fruitfulness as a personal achievement, a résumé of spiritual effort. But Jesus locates it entirely in union with him. This means that a day spent quietly trusting the vine is not a wasted day. Rest and rootedness are not the opposite of fruitfulness; they are its source. The branch that strains away from the vine does not become more productive — it withers. The single pastoral word for today is this: stay. Not perform. Not prove. Stay. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-18
