The Vine Does the Holding

"I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing." A branch does not strain to stay attached. It does not grip the vine through effort or willpower. The connection is simply where it lives. Jesus uses this image deliberately — not to describe occasional visits to prayer, but a continuous, structural dependence. Notice he does not say "without me you will accomplish less" or "struggle more." He says nothing. The branch cut from a vine does not produce inferior fruit; it produces none and eventually dries up entirely. This is not a threat but a description of reality. Our energy, our plans, our good intentions — all of them are downstream of that one living connection. The question for this Friday is not whether you worked hard this week, but whether your work drew its life from the right source. Fruitfulness is not a reward for effort; it is the natural result of staying joined. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-05-29
