The Same Hands, A Different Side

"Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find." They had fished all night and caught nothing. Not because they lacked skill — these were working fishermen, men who knew nets and water and tide. The problem was not effort. The problem was direction. When Jesus spoke from the shore, he did not criticize their technique. He simply redirected it. One instruction, one side of the boat, one haul so large they could not drag it in alone. This is worth sitting with: the same hands, the same net, the same water. What changed was which voice they listened to. Their own experience had told them the fish were not there. His word said otherwise, and it was right. We rarely need to become different people. We need to hear clearly which side of the boat we are being asked to cast toward — and then, without argument, cast. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-28
