The Side You Haven't Tried
Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. The disciples had worked through the night and caught nothing. They were not lazy men — they were experienced fishermen doing exactly what fishermen do. Effort was not the missing ingredient. What changed everything was a single redirecting word from the shore. Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not rebuke their technique. He did not explain why the left side failed. He simply named a direction they had not yet committed to. The same water. The same boat. The same hands on the same net — but a different word governing where it fell. There are places in life where our competence is genuine and our effort is honest, yet results stay thin. This story suggests that the problem is sometimes not capacity but orientation. One word from Jesus — heard and obeyed immediately — turned exhausted professionals into men who could barely haul in what they caught. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-13
