The Branch Does Not Choose the Soil

"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." A branch has no say in where the root goes. It does not negotiate with the ground, does not select its nutrients, does not decide the depth of the tap. It simply remains attached — and what the root draws up, the branch receives. Jesus does not say the branch struggles toward fruit or earns it through effort. He says the branch abides. The work of going deep belongs entirely to him. Our part is the simpler and harder thing: staying connected when the connection feels unremarkable, when nothing dramatic is happening, when the trunk looks ordinary. Most of the vine's work is invisible. Water moves through wood in silence. So does transformation in a person. The fruit that eventually appears — patience, honesty, steadiness under pressure — was traveling upward long before anyone noticed it on the outside. — Narrow Highway devotional, 2026-06-30
