Acoustics — waves, loudness, and harmonics
acoustics
The physics of sound and hearing, standing between matter and mind. Sound is a pressure wave in a medium (v = f lambda); loudness is logarithmic (the decibel); pitch is frequency and timbre is the harmonic series; a moving source shifts pitch (the Doppler effect, the acoustic cousin of the redshift). Four pillars rest on chemistry (the medium), the mind (perception), quantum mechanics (phonons), and relativity (Doppler). The stick (stick_acoustics_waves_loudness_and_harmonics) seals concert A's wavelength, a 30 dB ratio, and a third harmonic (tools/seed_acoustics.py).
- has part → The wave — v = f lambda — a pillar of acoustics (The wave)
- has part → Loudness — the decibel, a logarithm — a pillar of acoustics (Loudness)
- has part → Harmonics — pitch, timbre, phonons — a pillar of acoustics (Harmonics)
- has part → The Doppler effect — the acoustic redshift — a pillar of acoustics (The Doppler effect)
- part of → The Floor of Discovery — one floor, and by its design the fear of God — the physics of sound on the one map
